Historic Local Artists Featured Alongside Contemporary Artists at Barrett
Opening Reception for: Olin Dows & Thomas W. Barrett, Jr.,: Native Sons; Rafael Quirindongo Retrospective; Erin Kyle Danna, El Raval; Juried Members? Show
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY ?Barrett Art Center will open a series of four exhibitions on August 19 that include historic paintings and prints from Rhinebeck artist Olin Dows alongside the work of Poughkeepsie-born Thomas Weeks Barrett, Jr.
Both artists were printmakers, painters, and muralists; Dows was a member of the Dutchess County Art Association founded under Barrett?s leadership and Barrett was employed as a government-subsidized artist under the New Deal department headed by Dows. Together, their artwork provides a glimpse of the Hudson Valley?s historic art scene.
The Center will also open a single-gallery solo show featuring Rafael Quirindongo, who passed away in December 2016. Originally from New York City, Rafael?s background was rooted in the sciences, specifically astrophysics. More recently, he had pursued his passion for photography and was active in the River Winds Gallery in Beacon. Of his work, Quirindongo noted, "I?d like to say I don?t photograph things, but rather how they make me feel? In the end, it?s an expression of how I see the world, and perhaps, a very good way to get to know me." His photographs have appeared in Architectural Digest, Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post.
An additional solo show of works by Erin Kyle Danna provides a photographic portrait of Barcelona?s ancient Chinatown neighborhood, known as the Barrio Chino or Barri Xinès. The photographs capture a community in transition as cultures and traditions mix and mingle. Currently living and working in New York City, Danna grew up in southern New Jersey and is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
Historical and solo shows are joined by a Juried Members? Show in the second floor Crenson Gallery, selected by noted regional artist Staats Fasoldt. An opening reception for all four exhibitions is Saturday, August 19, 3:00 ? 6:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
