Saturday, February 6 8:00 p.m. The Culinary Institute of America's Marriott Pavilion NDSO brings together the restrained tunes of Gilbert and Sullivan and the irreverent music of Andrew Lloyd Webber for a dramatic evening of British theatre favorites that will include Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Mikado, and The Pirates of Penzance. The orchestra will be joined by 50 singers from the select choruses of John Jay and Roy C. Ketcham high schools. The choruses are under the direction of Candice Ruffalo and Matthew King, respectively. Victorian Era Meets Rock & Roll Kathleen Beckmann, NDSO's artistic director, expects that the contrasting styles of music from these two distinct periods of British theatre will make for an enjoyable and dynamic concert program. She views the concert as ''Victorian era meets rock & roll'' and says that, ''while the tunes of Gilbert and Sullivan are always prim, proper, and restrained, Webber's pieces can be irreverent and outrageous, with pounding rhythms, unusual meters, and harmonies that clash at times.''
