As Poughkeepsie’s old YMCA building is reconstructed into the Youth Opportunity Union (YOU), a community center for youth and families throughout Dutchess County, it’s imperative that youth have a say in what those opportunities look like. In February, the Workforce Development Center (WFDC) partnered with Talent Davis, Lead Community Engagement Specialist with MASS Design, to walk Youth One Stop participants through a dialogue about the overall design and offered services at the YOU.
When asked about the structure and facility, participants emphasized the need for recreational spaces, especially an open gym. The youths also wanted to ensure the YOU depicted important figures of Dutchess County. In addition, was the request for artwork created by youth to be displayed throughout the building. When asked about services and support, some expressed a desire to see educational alternatives offered; explaining that not everyone learns the same and having programs that offer unique educational services is important. Many requested specific programs in order to become specialized in a particular skill. Kaamilah Monroe commented, “I wish to have a music program at the YOU.” Others stressed their desire to have mentors and be taught life skills. Preparing youth for their future requires opportunities and supports for positive growth, including positive relationships, unique experiences, and skill-building opportunities. It’s evident that the youth of Dutchess County can identify these as prominent factors needed to succeed. The WFDC is glad to have a small team of Youth Service Specialists that does this work each day. How great will the impact be when Dutchess County creates the YOU, aligned with the Path to Promise initiative, to train and equip several specialists to serve hundreds of youth?
Collaborations with local organizations are important to the progression of our Workforce Development Programs. Partnering with Talent and MASS Design to ensure that the voices of youth are heard is the beginning phase of something greater. The Workforce Development Center looks forward to collaborating with MASS Design and the YOU to offer youth the opportunity to learn, play, and grow.
