Tinker camp is a program designed and run by SUNY Buffalo and has been running successfully over the past 3 years. We have decided to partner with them and run a sister camp here at SUNY New Paltz this summer. We hope to eventually extend the ages down to grade 7.
I can describe the camp to you: it consist of 5 days, the girls will be doing four engineering projects in the fields of: mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, civil engineering and electrical/computer engineering. They will be split up in groups and learn the process of design and test. For instance, in the biomedical engineering module they will be using an EKG heart monitoring system to measure the heart rates of different people with different activities and understand how the system works and how to measure data. In the mechanical engineering module, they will have access to our 3-D printing facilities and be allowed to create moving devices. Female engineering students from my group, Women In Science and Engineering (W.I.S.E) will be working with the girls the entire time, our hope is that they become role models to these girls and form a great relationship. Here is a link to the W.I.S.E group website: http://wisenewpaltz.wix.com/npwise
They will also get an on-campus experience by dining in the middle of the week with the engineering students at the campus dining hall. Also throughout the week, they will get to visit three local engineering companies - one large, one small and one medium size. At the end of the week, we will have a banquet and invite the girls' parents to celebrate the end of the camp.
