On Saturday June 3, Mount Gulian Historic Site will hold its 22nd Annual Historic Dinner, from 4:30 to 9:00PM. The evening will include a four-course meal and historical portrayal of passionate suffragist Susan B. Anthony. The delicious menu, inspired by the late 1800’s, will include Susan B. Anthony’s favorite dessert, sponge cake. Ms. Anthony joins us this year in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of women in New York State winning the right to vote. After fifteen years of teaching, Susan B. Anthony began her commitment to the women’s rights movement in 1852. For the next 40 years, she traveled, lectured, and canvassed across the nation for women’s suffrage. Near the end of her life, Ms. Anthony hand-selected the women who were to “pick up the mantle” and urged her successors to be ever-vigilant, expanding and protecting the rights for which she had fought so long and valiantly. She said, “We turn it over to a generation of women who are better-equipped. They have the unchallenged right to speak in public.” Regrettably, Ms. Anthony died in 1906, never having seen the fruits of her labor but she knew not to give in, not to give up. In 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, giving all women the right to vote. Susan B. Anthony will be portrayed by Marjorie Goldman, an actress from the American Historical Theatre. Ms. Goldman shares Ms. Anthony’s passion for women’s suffrage/women’s rights and for the cause of the abolition of slavery/racial equality. An experienced teacher like Ms. Anthony, Ms. Goldman loves children and recognizes “teachable moments” through which her fierce dedication to human rights is immediately communicated and understood. Through her interpretation of Ms. Anthony, we are reminded that “The world is not truly free…until the rights and privileges of others are free.” Diners will have the opportunity to meet and interact with this compassionate reformer and activist as they enjoy period music and a live auction. Cocktails will be served on the riverside lawn. The candlelight dinner, prepared by Bridgecreek Catering, will be served in our 18th century Dutch barn. Tickets are available for $150 per person and prepaid reservations should be made by May 19th.
